PS5 Pro Officially Announced

PS5 Pro Officially Announced

Published on 10 Sep 2024

Sony has officially announced the PS5 Pro, set to launch on November 7th, 2024. This upgraded version of the PlayStation 5 is designed to deliver improvements in performance, graphics, and storage. However, the PS5 Pro comes with a notable change—it will be an all-digital console with no disc drive included. The new console will retail for £699 GBP, $699.99 USD, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY, with prices including tax. For those who prefer physical games, Sony will sell a separate disc drive along with an optional vertical stand.

Sony claims the PS5 Pro offers significantly improved performance, including better performance and enhanced graphics. Central to these upgrades is a new, more powerful GPU with 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory than the standard PS5. This translates to games rendering up to 45% faster, ensuring a much more fluid and immersive gaming experience. Ray tracing has also been upgraded, with the ability to process light, shadows, and reflections at double or even triple the speed of the current PS5, providing more realistic lighting effects in every game.

Storage is also getting a bump, with the PS5 Pro featuring a 2TB SSD, giving gamers more room for their digital libraries—a crucial addition for an all-digital console. Alongside these hardware upgrades, the console will launch with the latest in wireless technology, supporting Wi-Fi 7 in territories where this standard is available, improving online gaming speeds and stability. The PS5 Pro also supports VRR and 8K gaming.

Sony has unveiled PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a machine-learning-based AI-driven upscaling technology, which all add more detail to images, resulting in sharper and more defined visuals.
