Nintendo has officially revealed the Nintendo Switch 2, the long-awaited successor to the highly successful original Switch. A dedicated Nintendo Direct is set for April 2025, and a glimpse at the next chapter in Nintendo’s gaming lineup.

Like its predecessor, the Switch 2 retains its hybrid nature, offering seamless transitions between handheld and home console gaming. In the reveal trailer, Nintendo highlighted its backward compatibility, confirming that most physical and digital Switch games will be playable on the new system. This ensures players can continue enjoying their current libraries while exploring new games on the upgraded hardware.

The trailer also introduced new magnetic Joy-Cons that replace the sliding rail mechanism of the original controllers. This design is expected to provide improved durability and ease of use, addressing a common critique of the original Switch Joy-Cons.

One of the most exciting moments of the trailer was the reveal of what appears to be a new Mario Kart game, which is expected to launch alongside the console.

Nintendo announced a dedicated Switch 2 Nintendo Direct for April 2025, where fans can expect to learn more about the console’s features, launch date, pricing, and system specifications. The Direct will likely showcase a lineup of first and third-party games that will be available at launch and beyond. In addition to the Nintendo Direct, the company revealed plans for Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, which will take place in major cities worldwide. These events will offer fans the chance to go hands-on with the new console ahead of its release, building excitement for the next generation of Nintendo gaming.

The launch date, price, and full technical specifications of the Switch 2 were not disclosed.
